Georgia as it is known today, or Gruzia as the Russians call it, today is the most visited country in the Caucasus Range.

The Ushguli – Mestia trek offers beautiful villages and hundreds of medieval towers, all surrounded by truly spectacular nature.

Although the Caucasus mountain range is impressive along its entire length, it’s in this province where the mountain reaches its apogee. Here you’ll find huge rocky peaks, hanging glaciers, powerful rivers, and colorful valleys.

Trekking. Caucaz. Svaneti

Svaneti (locals pronounce it „Suaneti”) is probably one of the most beautiful regions in Georgia and the essence of what the country has to offer.

The region was extremely well known in ancient times and the legend of the „golden wool” recounted by Strabo in his famous „Geografica” from the 7th century BC was born here.

Svaneti is situated in north-west of Georgia, just south of the main ridge of the „Great Caucasus” range and consists of two parts: Zemo Svaneti (Upper) and Kvemo Svaneti (Lower).

Kvemo Svaneti is home to some of the highest and most famous mountains in the Caucasus such as Shkhara (third highest) and Ushba (one of the most difficult).

The village of Ushguli – one of our major trekking sights (UNESCO heritage), is located at an altitude of 2,100m at the foot of Shkhara Peak.

About 70 families (200 people) live in the village, enough to support a small school. The area is snow-covered for 6 months of the year and the road to Mestia is often inaccessible.

The tower houses so typical of Svaneti are found throughout the village.

The Ushguli chapel on a hilltop near the village dates back to the 12th century and the whole valley is full of old defence towers and churches.

The trekking difficulty is low but requires a good level of fitness to be able to walk 5-6h daily and not very high expectations for overnight accommodations during the walk itself.

Trekking days: 5

Walking hours/day: 5-6h

Distance: 68km

Total elevation gained:: +3.761m / – 4.535m.
